Steve Sugden, MD MPH MSS FASAM DipABLM earned his medical degree at University of Utah School of Medicine in Salt Lake City, completed a Psychiatry Residency program at University of California Davis Medical Center, and much later added a Master of Public Health degree at University of California Berkeley following clinical practice in a variety of settings. His remarkable range of of practice interests are reflected in his board certifications in Psychiatry, Disaster Medicine, Addiction Medicine and Lifestyle Medicine. An ongoing major focus on military and veteran medicine was developed through trainings such as Public Health and Medical Services in Defense Support of Civil Authorities, Medical Management of Chemical and Biological Casualties, Tactical Combat Medical Care, and completion of an MSS degree at U.S. Army War College, as well as psychiatry and addiction recovery treatment practice at Sacramento Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He is a Colonel and Command Surgeon in the U.S. Army Reserves, and at the University of Utah he serves as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Adult Psychiatry in the Huntsman Mental Health Institute, and directs the the Associate Addiction Medicine and Associate Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship Programs in the School of Medicine.
Dr. Sugden also is author or co-author of nine articles in peer-reviewed research journals, three reviews and one pending textbook chapter, and serves as a reviewer for the International Journal of Disease Reversal and Prevention, and for the American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine. He has been honored by being elected as a Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine, and as President of the Utah Psychiatric Association. His extensive service within the nonprofit sector is further evidenced by positions such as Chair of the Disaster and Humanitarian Committee at the Wilderness Medical Society, Secretary of the American Board of Disaster Medicine, and Co-Chair of the Behavioral and Mental Health Member Interest Group, and Chair of its Substance Use Subcommittee, at the American College of Lifestyle Medicine.
