Shayna Smith, MD DipABLM earned her Doctorate of Medicine at University of Arkansas Medical Sciences, and completed a residency in General Pediatrics and a Fellowship in Pediatric Emergency Medicine at the The Children's Mercy Hospital, Kansas City MO. She is multiply board certified in Pediatrics, Pediatric Emergency Medicine and Lifestyle Medicine, and has practiced as a pediatric physician since 2011 at North Atlanta Pediatrics, adding another site in 2021 at the Center for Discovery Eating Disorder Treatment. In 2017 she started working as a Pediatric Emergency and Urgent Care Physician at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, and in 2021 she opened her own practice, Flourish Pediatrics, at the northern edge of Atlanta in Sandy Springs. She was honored as Best Pediatrician in Atlanta by the Atlantan Magazine in 2021.
Dr. Smith focuses on providing evidence-based pediatric care from the age of birth to college and implementing a whole food oriented plant-based / plant-positive diet as well as lifestyle medicine principles such as physical activity, stress management, sleep improvement and social connectiveness strategies. She uses a personalized whole-body approach to pediatric health and wellness, in a judgement-free zone that accepts differences in children and families. Her Flourish Pediatrics setting is a small practice that allows time to get to know the patient and family on a personal level, working interactively by providing whole-family nutrition counseling and offering educational classes and programs to support their needs.
Dr. Smith recognizes that childhood obesity has tripled in the past 30 years and now one out of three American children is overweight or obese, and there is mounting evidence of the beginning of chronic disease conditions in childhood, and persistent evidence that poor nutrition is a major contributor to all of them. She has found among incoming patients an alarmingly increased incidence of hypertension, elevated cholesterol and pre-diabetes markers, with children as young as 10 years of age already on type 2 diabetes medication and being evaluated by cardiologists for heart disease risk level. She utilizes lifestyle medicine and an emphasis on nutrient dense plant-based foods to address the root causes of disease, seeking to prevent or treat chronic diseases and other conditions such as anemia or nutritional deficiencies.
