Practicing nephrologist Sean Hashmi, MD MS FASN earned his Doctorate in Medicine at University of California San Diego School of Medicine after receiving a Master of Science degree in Physiological Science from the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), and he went on to complete an Internal Medicine residency and a Nephrology fellowship at UCLA.  He is also certified in Obesity Medicine by the American Board of Obesity Medicine, and is a past President, Secretary and Treasurer of the Clinical Section of the Obesity Society.  He has served since 2011 in many capacities in his full-time practice at Southern California Permanente Medical Group (SCPMG), currently holding the positions of:  National Chair of the Permanente Federation's Interregional Clinical Practice Group in Lifestyle and Obesity Medicine;  and Regional Physician Director of Weight Management and Clinical Nutrition.  Past leadership roles at SCPMG included:  Assistant Area Medical Director for Medical Specialties;  Medical Staff President;  Interim Chief of Allergy and Immunology;  SCPMG Board of Directors member;  and several positions addressing physician burnout via innovative self-care programs.

Dr. Hashmi is the author or co-author of nine articles related to nephrology, obesity or Lifestyle Medicine in peer-reviewed research journals, and he has lectured in a variety of settings about these subjects, particularly covering nutrition and chronic kidney disease in recent years.  He is the founding director of SELF Principle, a nonprofit that provides evidence-based health, nutrition, and wellness information non-commercially to the public, and that supports children’s education worldwide with school supplies, scholarships and more.  He is also the former Co-Chair of the Lifestyle Medicine in Health Systems Member Interest Group, and a former Treasurer and Board of Directors member, at the American College of Lifestyle Medicine.

After arriving in the U.S. at age ten, and prior to his medical career, Dr. Hashmi was long a practicer, instructor and studio manager in martial arts fields, and he still regards substantial physical activity as natural and necessary as eating.  At the tragic occasion of the illness and death of a family member at a young age, he judged her healthcare to have been poor and shamefully inattentive.  He then promised that he would become a physician, and one who would truly care about his patients, and who would try to make a difference in the life of every person he came across.  Kaiser Permanente has honored him with the Physician Exceptional Contribution Award and the Everyday Hero award, as well as the Faculty of the Year Award at Woodland Hills Family Medicine Residency where he has long served as a mentor.  In recognition of his efforts, he was also selected to walk alongside Kaiser Permanente's 2012 Rose Parade float, "Every Body Walk!" and 2014 Rose Parade float "First Steps to Total Health", and named by the nonprofit SOSMentor as a Wellness Mentor Champion.
