Jennifer Trilk, PhD FACSM DipACLM earned her PhD in Human Exercise Physiology at the University of Georgia, Athens GA and completed postgraduate training in Public Health at the University of South Carolina, Columbia SC. She serves as Associate Professor of Physiology and Exercise Science at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville. She also serves it as Director of the Lifestyle Medicine Core Curriculum which comprehensively trains medical students in nutrition, physical activity / exercise, behavior change, student/patient self-care and resiliency, as preparation to prevent and treat the nation’s top chronic diseases such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and various forms of cancer.
Dr. Trilk is a Diplomate of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine, and co-founded and co-directs the Lifestyle Medicine Education Collaborative (LMEd), which offers leadership and guidance to medical schools across the globe. In 2019, LMEd received the U.S. President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition Community Leadership Award, the second such award acknowledging Dr. Trilk's work. In 2017, she presented the rationale for Lifestyle Medicine training in medical education at a Capitol Hill congressional briefing in partnership with the American College of Preventive Medicine, and she has brought attention to this internationally as a 2017 invited Adjunct Professor at the Università degli Studi del Piemonte Orientale (UPO) medical school in Novara, Italy, and as an invited speaker at the VegMed Online 2021 conference in Berlin, Germany.
Dr. Trilk also founded and directs Exercise is Medicine Greenville®, a comprehensive 12-week medically-based exercise and lifestyle program for adults facing chronic health conditions, and at a 2016 press conference at the National Press Club in Washington DC, she represented Exercise is Medicine Greenville as the first program of its kind. In 2019 she received the Exercise is Medicine Global Leadership Award from the American College of Sports Medicine, which has also elected her as a Fellow and as a Board of Trustees member. She has received national recognition by the Association of American Medical Colleges (Press Release 2017; Press Release 2018), U.S. News and World Report, Chicago Tribune and CNN, among others, and in 2013 was invited by the Bipartisan Policy Center to present “Teaching Nutrition and Physical Activity in Medical School: Training Doctors for Prevention-Oriented Care.” She is a member of the Advisory Board for Physicians Association for Nutrition International and a Fellow of the Aspen Global Leadership Network's Health Innovators Fellowship Program,
Dr. Trilk is a Reviewer for ten academic and research journals, and the author or co-author of 43 articles, 7 abstracts and 2 poster presentations in peer-reviewed journals. When not working in the medical space, she spends most of her time in equestrian sport, where she is passionate about applying her Bachelors and Masters degrees in Animal Science and Equine Exercise Physiology for promoting the human-equine relationship for physical and mental health.
