In 2000, Gabrielle (Brie) Turner-McGrievy, PhD MS RDN FTOS became a Registered Dietitian and received her Master of Science degree in Nutrition from the University of Alabama, and went on to work in clinical research for four years before pursuing doctoral studies. She completed her doctoral degree in Nutrition and her postdoctoral fellowship at the School of Public Health, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Health Promotion, Education and Behavior, and Deputy Director of the Technology Center to Promote Healthy Lifestyles (TecHealth), at the University of South Carolina.
Dr. Turner-McGrievy is the Founder and Director of the University of South Carolina's Behavioral Research in Eating (BRIE) Lab, dedicated to investigations of nutrition, obesity and chronic diseases. She is currently the Principal Investigator there for the NEW Soul Study (Nutritious Eating with Soul), a National Institutes of Health R01 randomized trial, partnering with local vegan soul food restaurants and chefs in an intervention targeting reduction of cardiovascular disease risk among African Americans. She has been the author or co-author of 127 articles in research journals, and an ad hoc reviewer for 52 journals, and has secured more than $3.5 million in grant funding for research work.
Dr. Turner-McGrievy’s research focuses on behavioral interventions for weight loss and for the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases, particularly involving plant-based dietary approaches for the latter purpose among adults. She has published research on the use of emerging technologies such as podcasting and social media for behavioral weight loss interventions and health promotion. Her research has combined these delivery methods with other mobile enhancements, including the use of diet monitoring apps for smartphones. She has completed three randomized trials examining various plant-based eating styles, one among women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, one among overweight and obese adults, and one among adults at risk for chronic inflammation.
Dr. Turner-McGrievy has received numerous awards during her nutrition career, including the Recognized Young Dietitian of the Year award in 2004, the Society of Behavioral Medicine’s Early Career Investigator Award for 2016 and Excellence in Research Award for 2007, The Obesity Society's Pat Simons Award in 2012, and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Excellence in Weight Management Outcomes Research Award for 2017. In 2018, she was inducted as a Fellow of the Obesity Society.
