​Debra Shapiro, MD FACOG DipABLM earned her Doctorate in Medicine at the University of California School of Medicine, San Francisco and proceeded to complete a Residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, and has been practicing as a board certified obstetrician gynecologist for nearly three decades. She was honored as a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and has also been certified as a Lifestyle Medicine Diplomate since January 2021 and received a Certificate in Plant-based Nutrition from the T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies. She was the founder and and longtime past Senior Physician for the respected medical practice Women Caring for Women, leading a care team of physicians, nurse practitioners and midwives, and more recently has been practicing part time as a staff gynecologist for employees at Genentech/Roche in South San Francisco.
During her career Dr. Shapiro, who is also a is a certified Vegan Lifestyle Coach and Educator, has created and maintained two innovative health promotion programs focused on whole food plant-based diets: A New View of Food, individual coaching to address chronic disease, to guide deprescribing, and to support nutrition transitions; and Pregnancy Advantage, group coaching for women preparing for pregnancy, to address environmental toxins and to mobilize nutrition to increase fertility and result in healthier pregnancies and children. She is passionate about advancing health and wellness through plant based nutrition, which has played a major role in her successful past clinical experience, for quite a few patients, of reversing chronic health conditions such as hypertension, hyperlipidemia, PCOS, Crohn’s Disease and prediabetes,
Dr. Shapiro was honored seven times by Castle Connolly as a San Francisco Top Doctor, and was co-author of the opening chapter,"Optimal Nutrition for Women", in the of the epic compilation Improving Women’s Health Across the Lifespan, published by CRC Press in 2022. She has presented at a number of live events, podcasts and recorded summits, and often has covered the potentially transformative power of plant-based nutrition during the menopausal transition, offering compelling arguments based on her comprehensive review of scientific evidence. She details how adopting a plant-based diet could help alleviate common menopausal symptoms, promote hormonal balance and significantly enhance overall well-being during this natural life transition, rendering it less daunting for women. She hopes to encourage a broader discussion among health professionals and the general populace about the possible integration of plant-based nutrition in the management of menopausal symptoms.
