Amanda E. McKinney, MD CPE FACLM FACOG completed her M.D. degree at University of Nebraska College of Medicine, and then trained in Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery, at the University of California Irvine. After numerous years of medical practice in these areas, she transitioned from clinical practice to the educational setting in a university environment. At Doane University, she serves as Assistant Professor of Health Sciences, as Program Director of the Open Learning Academy, and as the Executive Director of the Institute for Human and Planetary Health (which she founded).
While practicing at Beatrice Community Hospital, Dr. McKinney conyinued to develop further her interest in Lifestyle Medicine, becoming Director of Lifestyle Medicine at this institution. She serves as a member of the Board of Directors, and Chair of the Membership Committee, for the American College of Lifestyle Medicine, and formerly served as Planning Committee Co-Chair for several of its annual conferences. At Doane University she has created a course titled “Introduction to Lifestyle Medicine” for purposes of the pre-requisites for those post-baccalaureates entering the various health professions, and is developing an online Certificate in Lifestyle Medicine focused on Plant-based Nutrition for physicians, PA’s and NP’s.
Dr. McKinney also hold a CPE (Certified Physician Executive) credential granted by the American Association for Physician Leaders. In recent years, an additional educational focus `for her has been peak oil, climate change and what will be necessary for a decent survival of our species, and this is reflected in curricular offerings by the Institute for Human and Planetary Health.
